We get this question a lot here at Bartlett Heating and Air. Heating season is upon us so you might want to make some decisions soon on whether to buy a new furnace or not. People are more money conscious now a days so they tend to make decisions based more on how it will save them money in the long run. To help make that choice we will give you some tips on purchasing a new furnace. You take two bills from last year. One from early fall and one from late spring, this will show you the base load of your utilities. Subtract the average base load from each bill and it will leave you with the average it takes to heat your home each month so you total that to see how much you use for the heating season. When you switch from a older furnace whose efficiency is about 70% with its age to a new one that is between 80 and 95% you are using between 10-25% more efficient equipment which equals more savings on energy. Say your heating costs were $800 for your heating season and you got a 92% furnace, that is 22% more efficient than your old one so you could potentially save $176 a year on your energy costs alone. Not only do you save on your energy, you save money because the new equipment doesn’t break as often and when it does its typically covered under warranty. Keeping your older furnace usually needs something fixed at least once a year and those costs add up on top of costing more to run. Buying a new system not only saves you money, it also give you peace of mind knowing that your furnace will be there to keep your family warm when you need it without fear of it failing with each day that adds age to your old system. You should also consider a new furnace if you have or will be adding on to your home. More space added means you need a bigger furnace to heat the new areas of home. Also make sure you get an Energystar rated furnace. They are proven to save even more on energy then the others. The most efficient is the condensing furnace.
