Your air conditioner can make a lot of different noises while it runs. One of the noises you might hear is a dripping water sound and that is normal. If you see water actually dripping on your unit, you might need it to be repaired. Your air conditioner does not use running water at all. It uses refrigerant which is a gas to cool your home. The refrigerant changes from a gas to a liquid and back. This refrigerant runs through the coil to absorb the heat from your home and then blow the cooler air back in. It is absorbing water moisture in this process. The water drip that you hear is the moisture that gathered on the coil dripping down into the condensate pan. The water in the condensate pan drains into your sewer system via a pipe. When everything is working the correct way you never see this water. If you are seeing the water drip then you have an issue that needs to be solved. There are a few different things that may cause you to see water around your air conditioner. Typically the condensate pan can be in on the wrong angle which will cause it to leak. It may also be missing, so it will need to be replaced if that is the case. If the drain that is attached to your pan comes loose the water will leak out. Fixing the drain pipe connection will solve that issue. Another drain issue that you may run into is a clog. If something ends up clogging that drain it will back up and overflow. Water should never be seen on or around your air conditioner.
