On of the most common issue we see with fan motors is a broken belt. Broken or loose fan belts are a common issue we run into. This is mainly in older air conditioners because the newer ones use direct motors. Belts will start to fray and then put pressure on the fan motor which will eventually break causing a need for repair. The broken belt will fly around inside which has the potential to damage other interior parts. A frayed belt will make a clicking noise and a broken belt will make a loud banging noise. Another thing that can go wrong is issues with your fan blades. Sometime debris gets into the interior of the AC. This debris has the potential to hit the fan blades, denting them and potentially breaking them. Fan blades are formed a certain way to fit and function correctly in their casing. Any dents and bends can make the blades hit the outside casing causing damage.
You could have a bad relay. The AC has electrical relays that control the voltage to the fans. If the relay get stuck in the open position the motor will not run. If the relay gets stuck in the closed position, the fan will not shut off. This can be fixed by having a technician like the ones at Bartlett Heating and Air clean or replace the relays.
Perhaps the biggest reason of fan motor failure is lack of maintenance. You must maintain the AC each year! Fan motors have the tendency to break and wear out over time. When your ac is dirty with dust and debris due to lack of maintenance, the fan motor will struggle. Having this happen for many years will make the motor burn out faster than normal. Making sure you keep up with your annual AC cleanings will make sure you get the most out of your motor. Another way to wear down the motor is to use it too much.
