Air conditioners use refrigerant to help cool your home. In the past we used something called R-22 which is full of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC’s) which was found to be damaging to the atmosphere. The government is slowly phasing out the R-22 and using something called R410A. R410A is better for the environment. In 2010 air conditioner manufactures started making air conditioning systems without any refrigerant in them at all. We call this a dry charged system. This allows for the HVAC technician to fill the air conditioner on site with R-22. For right now the R-22 is still legal to use for service and repair but is in the process of being phased out. Dry charged systems offer a simple and relatively inexpensive option for replacing your air conditioner. Dry charged systems come with a 5 year warranty and are relatively cheaper than the 410A system. There are cons to it though starting with the R-22 damages the environment so it is being phased out. With it being phased out, the prices of the R-22 are rising which means it will be more expensive to recharge your system. The dry charged system is less efficient than the new 410A systems. The choice is yours but you should weigh the pros and cons of the future when you make your decision. Bartlett Heating and Air can answer any of your HVAC questions so call us today!
