A programmable thermostat is a great thing to have with your HVAC system. A programmable thermostat can help you save money for a few reasons. You have to be using the thermostat correctly in order to have the right amount of savings. There are a few different models. There is a 7 day model which is the best because you can set each day individually to meet your needs. There is a 5+2 model which allows you to set the same schedule Monday through Friday with a different weekend schedule. If you have a regular schedule but a varying schedule on the weekend you can have a 5-1-1 model that allows the same schedule Monday to Friday and different Saturday and Sunday. They have 4 settings on them. Wake time, daytime, evening time, and sleep time. Wake time should be set for the time that the first time someone gets up and set to 78. Day time should be set to start when the last person leaves for the day. Set it for 7-10 degrees higher than the wake temperature. Evening time should start when the first person gets home from work. Setting it around 75 should cool your home and save money. Sleep time will start when the last person goes to bed at night. You can set it 4 degrees higher than the evening temperature. You can also just shut it off on cool nights and open the windows. When you have your thermostat installed, you should have it installed on an interior wall that is not in direct sunlight or in a drafty place. You can use the hold button when you go away for a few days at a time. You can override the settings but it is not recommended that you do that often.
