Air filters go by MERV ratings that range from 1-16. Filters in the 1-4 range will trap dust, dander, pollen, and more small elements. Filters 1-4 are ok for most homes. Filters 8-11 are great for homes that have smokers that smoke inside, pets, and people with allergies. These filters can catch the small pet dander that others cant and can trap the smoke so it doesn’t circulate around the house. Filters of 12-16 are not typically used in homes but sometimes are when they need a very hygienic environment. Hospitals typically use 13 and up because they need the best filtration possible in that environment. The higher the number the faster it fills and needs to be replaced more often but for the comfort they bring it is worth it.
