While many people welcome the warmth that the spring season brings, there are some who dread it due to the seasonal colds and allergies they experience. In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning repair company Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning shares tips on how to beat seasonal colds and allergies.
Keep your mask on.
While mask mandates have recently been lifted in Chicago public schools, if you’re susceptible to seasonal colds or allergies, you may want to keep yours on. Face masks are designed to filter the coronavirus, which has much smaller particles compared to common allergens like pollen. Whether you’re gardening or commuting to work or school, wearing a mask outdoors will help protect you against seasonal allergies.
Keep up with HVAC maintenance. There are several reasons why you should keep up with HVAC maintenance: it keeps your furnace and air conditioner running reliably, reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns and maintains indoor air quality. HVAC maintenance should be conducted by an HVAC professional twice a year – once in preparation for the cooling season and again for the heating season.
A key task in HVAC maintenance is making sure that indoor air pollutants don’t make their way into the air ducts through leaks in the ductwork. Duct cleaning and leak repair are typically done together, and are best done when the weather is relatively mild. This is why we here at Bartlett offer duct cleaning during the spring and fall. You may also need filter replacement, especially if your current filters haven’t been replaced in the past three months or so.
Keep an eye on your relative indoor humidity levels. Indoor humidity levels should be kept at about 50% relative to outdoor levels. Dry air can cause nosebleeds and dryness of the nose and throat that can make seasonal allergies worse. It can also cause dry skin and an increased amount of dander in pets, which can also trigger allergies in some people. On the other hand, humid air favors mold growth in hidden areas in your home. Keep an eye on your relative indoor humidity levels by the readout on your digital thermostat or by purchasing a hygrometer and running a humidifier or dehumidifier as needed.
