Furnaces come in single, two stage, and two stage variable speed at 80 and 90 percent. When choosing a furnace you want to decide how energy efficient you want it to be, 90% is more efficient than 80%. Single stage furnace is the typical furnace that was used most in the past. The way they run is when the thermostat wants the heat higher, the furnace kicks on at 100% power until the temperature raised to the wanted level. The two stage can run half power or full power. The first stage runs at half power using half the gas at first and if it doesn’t sufficiently heat your home, the second stage kicks in to do so. The other choice you can make is a variable speed furnace. It has a blower motor fan that has no set speed so it constantly is evaluating the pressure in the ducts and compensating for that to make sure you always have correct air flow.
