There are so many choices to make when trying to decide which HVAC filter to get. One of the choices is an electrostatic filter. An electrostatic filter is one that uses static electricity to work. When air passes through the electrostatic filter it gets charged with positive and negative layers. The fibers in the filter attract and hold the dust, dirt, dander, and other particles. When the particles go through the first layer, they get positively charged. The positively charged particles will then meet with the negatively charged filter areas and get stuck to them until they are washed away. The more layers your filter has the more it can catch. Even though you will now have an electrostatic filter, it still needs to be maintained. Just because you don’t have to change the filter doesn’t mean you can forget about it. You will need to clean the electrostatic filter each month to ensure there is no excess build up. Excess buildup will let dust, dirt, and other particles enter into your HVAC system and potentially damage it. If there is no clean area on your filter, it can’t do its job of catching particles. Cleaning the electrostatic filter is easy. You remove the filter, remove excess dirt with a vacuum, rinse the filter with water on the opposite side of airflow, then you wipe clean. You can also fill a spray bottle with 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap and water and spray the filter, let it sit for 5 minutes and then rinse clean. You have to let the filter dry completely before you put it back in the HVAC system. Electrostatic filters are a more environmentally friendly filter that helps improve your air quality.
