If you have ever went to your air conditioner and seen ice on the lines it is not a good thing. An air conditioner that develops ice on the outside of it is not working properly and needs to be checked out by a qualified technician like the ones at Bartlett Heating and Air. Ice on the AC makes the evaporator coil harder to absorb heat. The refrigerant that runs through the line is cold and when it is not allowed to warm up while running through, condensation form and freezes on the line prolonging the issue. There are a couple different reasons ice can form on your air conditioner. The first reason that ice forms is due to a clogged filter from not regularly changing them. A clogged filter restricts air flow that is needed. It is important to keep the filters clean when running the AC. If you notice ice you should check your filter and change it if it is dirty. This is the easiest way to prevent ice from forming. Another reason ice forms is due to a dirty evaporating coil. This needs to be cleaned by a qualified technician because it needs to be removed in order to clean. Just removing the ice off the coil will not solve the problem. It is recommended that you have your air conditioner cleaned and checked each spring to make sure everything is in working order. One of the most serious ice issues is loss of refrigerant levels. The drop in levels causes ice to form on the coil and can damage the compressor which is the heart of the air conditioner. The refrigerant will not allow the compressor to cool down properly so it has the potential to overheat and burn out. This needs to get fixed right away so it doesn’t cause further damage. If you spot ice on the outside of your air conditioner call Bartlett Heating and Air right away and we will come out and fix it for you.
