The spring season can sometimes bring plenty of rain showers, and one of the most common questions homeowners ask us is whether rains will affect their air conditioning systems. In today’s post, Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning sets the record straight on whether or not rain can affect air conditioning systems.
Rain and Your Air Conditioning Unit
Contact with water — whether from rainfall or from a garden hose — will not affect the condenser unit, or the part of the air conditioner that’s situated outside your home. In fact, today’s air conditioners are designed to withstand most weather conditions. If properly installed on a platform or suspended from the ground, it won’t be at risk of being damaged by flooding. Sensitive components like the aluminum cooling fins are housed in an enclosure that protects it from debris and small animals.
Risks to the Outdoor Unit
Having said that, air conditioning systems are not indestructible. There are still some things that may cause damage to it. As mentioned above, flooding poses the greatest risk of damage, which is why HVAC technicians survey the yard and choose a spot with good drainage. This is also the reason why the outdoor unit is placed on a platform or mounted on the wall. If you have pets or if the yard is accessible to animals that urinate to mark their territory, you’ll need to make sure the outdoor unit is inspected and cleaned regularly.
Do You Need to Cover Your AC Unit?
You may have seen AC covers being sold online. Covering the AC can protect it from water, dirt and animal droppings, but it is not necessary. Air conditioners require airflow to vent the heat gathered from the indoors while in use, and a cover will only trap heat and moisture inside and increase strain on the system.
If you must protect the outdoor unit from impact, animals and other outside forces, the general rule is to allow clearance of at least 12 inches from all sides. Some HVAC manufacturers require as much as 24 inches, so make sure you check your air conditioner’s user guide. The enclosure must allow airflow at all times, and all sides must be accessible for cleaning and maintenance.
