Today is forecast to be our highest heat of the season so far. The temperatures are projected to reach into the lower 90’s with heat indices that can reach 101. With temperatures and heat index that high you want to make sure you are prepared. Summer heat my not seem dangerous but it can make you sick if you aren’t careful. Here are some precautions to take when the summer heat is high. Before the heat comes, prepare as much as you can. Get windows and doors sealed to help keep cold air in. Have your air conditioner cleaned and checked before the heat comes to make sure it is working. HVAC companies get slammed at times like this so the wait will be longer than you would like. Close shades and blinds to keep as much sun out of your home as possible. During the heat NEVER leave pets or kids in hot cars, even for a short time, high heat in cars can kill them. Try and stay out of the sun during peak daytime heating. If you don’t have air conditioning, try to stay on the lowest level of your home in the shade. If your AC is broke, try spending time in public places that will be air conditioned like a mall, library, theater, ect. Make sure you keep hydrated with lots of water. Do not drink alcohol. Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing and a hat. Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen on when out in the sun. If you have to work outside, take it easy. Avoid strenuous activity and make sure to take breaks so you don’t overwork yourself. Make sure you keep an eye on the elderly, overweight, children, anyone with respiratory issues, and pets because they are all more sensitive to the high heat and need to be watched.
