Sometimes air conditioning repair can take longer than expected. If a replacement part needs to be ordered from the manufacturer, you may have to wait a few days. In today’s post, Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning shares a quick guide on how to keep your home cool while you’re waiting for your AC to get fixed.
Use Your Fans
Turn on your ceiling and standalone fans to create cooling air currents. Some ceiling fans have a switch for counterclockwise rotation, which allows it to pull warm air from the middle of the room and force cool air from the floor to circulate. You can also create cool air by placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan, however, it will raise the relative indoor humidity in the room. This means you will also need to run a dehumidifier when you do this.
Open the Windows
Opening the windows on a breezy day will do more than just cool your home. It can also help maintain indoor air quality by flushing out indoor air pollutants. Opening the windows at night, after outdoor temperatures have dropped, can also help cool down your home even when there’s no wind.
Cook on the Grill
Your furnace is not the only source of heat from your indoor spaces. Radiant heat from the stovetop can contribute to the heat indoors, which can be really noticeable if your air conditioner isn’t running. Take this as an opportunity to fire up your outdoor grill and use it for cooking — and not just for barbecues. You can place a cast iron pan on the grill top to cook eggs and vegetables without charring them.
Lower the Shades
Lower the shades in the room during the hottest time of the day, AC or no AC. Window treatments can help block direct sunlight and prevent heat from accumulating in the room, essentially creating a greenhouse effect. Other long-term solutions include planting trees in the yard and investing in energy-efficient windows.
