Cold air naturally removes moisture from the air. However, relative indoor humidity levels during the summer can sometimes rise to the point that your air conditioner won’t be able to keep up. In today’s post, local air conditioning repair contractor Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning shares the signs that your home needs a dehumidifier.
How Do Dehumidifiers Work?
A dehumidifier draws warm, moist air in using a fan and blows it through refrigerated coils, similar to the ones in your air conditioner’s evaporator unit. The moisture turns into condensation, which is collected in a storage tank. The resulting cool, dry air will then be released by the dehumidifier. The ideal relative indoor humidity level is between 30% and 50%, and most dehumidifiers are equipped with a sensor that detects when this level is reached.
Signs That Indicate You Need a Dehumidifier
The easiest way to check relative indoor humidity levels is to use a hygrometer, which can be purchased online or from a furnace or air conditioning company. If you don’t already have one, the following signs may indicate you need a dehumidifier in your home.
Condensation on the windows and doors occurs when moist indoor air comes into contact with the cool surface of your windows and doors. Contrary to what many people think, condensation on the windows does not indicate a leak.
Mold growth, particularly on the bathroom ceiling, indicates high moisture levels in the room. In addition to running a dehumidifier, an exhaust fan can help vent excess humidity when you use the bathroom. Affected areas may also be accompanied by a stale or “wet” odor.
Blistering paint and peeling wallpaper indicate moisture penetrating the walls, which can cause paint and wallpaper paste to lose their adhesive properties.
Creaking doors, floorboards and cabinets are caused by wood absorbing moisture, which results in loose joints, screws and nails. In severe cases, the wood may warp and result in hard-to-close cabinet doors and odd bumps on the floor.
