Maintaining HVAC system efficiency is beneficial in many ways: it helps reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns, prolong your furnace or air conditioner’s lifespan and keep your utility bills low. In today’s post, Bartlett Heating & Air Conditioning shares the signs of an inefficient HVAC system.
Insufficient cooling or heating — One of the clearest signs of an inefficient HVAC system is low output. During this time, your HVAC system may take longer than usual to cool or heat the room. Low output can be caused by a combination of leaking refrigerant lines, dirty condenser coils and similar problems. An HVAC technician will need to fix the leak in the refrigerant line and replenish the refrigerant.
Ice buildup on the compressor — Ice buildup is another problem caused by leaking refrigerant, particularly in older units. A regular routine to clean and check the AC — and calling your HVAC technician when you notice this or other signs of an AC problem — can help prevent further damage to your HVAC system.
Frequent cycling — HVAC systems cycle on with the need to provide heating or cooling, then cycle off when they’ve reached the target temperature. Ideally, this happens only a few times a day, and you can hear when it does. If your HVAC system is cycling on and off too frequently, this means the system is misreading your home’s indoor temperature. With a brand-new unit, frequent cycling is a sign of an oversized HVAC system.
High utility bills — An inefficient HVAC system consumes more energy, often just to meet your home’s minimum heating or cooling needs. This can cause a noticeable increase in your utility bills. It’s not an immediate or noticeable increase, however; if you have a fixed budget for utility costs, you’ll notice a gradual increase. A decline in HVAC performance isn’t going to fix itself, and leaving it unaddressed by an HVAC technician will just lead to higher utility bills.
