We get this question a lot here at Bartlett Heating and Air. You do not need to cover your AC for the winter. There are quite a few reasons you should not cover the AC. Covers do not protect from dirt because dirt gets sucked in when the unit is on. When the unit is off no dirt is getting sucked in so covering to protect from dirt doesn’t work. The AC does not need to be protected from snow and col of winter. They were built in such a way to withstand elements. Covering the unit will not keep moisture out of the system. It can possibly help moisture build in the area because you are trapping the moisture it and cause issues like mold. If you are covering to keep animals out of the unit you are actually inviting them to nest there. Animals want to find cover for them and their families when it is cold out and your AC cover will provide just that. You can cover your unit in the fall when the leaves and nuts are falling off the trees to help keep that out. When you cover for the fall make sure it is only on top and not a full cover. If you cover the unit completely you will risk having moisture which will rust your unit out. While you would think it is a great idea to cover the unit in the winter it is not. Save yourself and your AC the trouble and leave the cover off for the winter. Call Bartlett Heating and Air with any questions you may have.
