Summer is almost in full swing and people are starting to turn on their air conditioners for the first time of the season depending on where you live. If your air conditioner isn’t functioning properly, there could be a few causes. The first thing you should have looked at is getting the annual AC clean and check. The technicians come out and do a 28 point inspection, cleans the coils and other components to make sure it is in perfect working order. If you have had it cleaned, checked, and new filter inside then it could be something bigger. The following are common issues with the air conditioners.
Faulty Wiring– When your air conditioner is tripping the breaker a lot or just not getting power at all, faulty wiring may be the culprit. Faulty wiring is dangerous and can pose a fire hazard to your home. You have to make sure you have a certified technician installing and wiring your air conditioner so that it is safe and work properly.
Low Refrigerant– When your unit is low on what we call refrigerant, it will not cool the air in your home. Low refrigerant could signal a leak in your air conditioner. If you need more refrigerant, there is most likely a leak in the system that should be found and fixed. If the leak is a big one where you lose a lot of refrigerant, you are most likely better off replacing the unit itself.
Outside fan not Working- If your home is not cooling down the way it should then you might have an issue with the outside fan. The outside fan is what transfers the heat from inside to the outside. If the fan is not working properly then the heat transfer can overheat the compressor making it overload the safety and can cause damage to the internal compressor.
Outside Unit Not Working- An outside unit not working could be a contactor issue, a lack of power in general, or it can even be a faulty thermostat.
Frozen Inside Coil– When your coil is frozen you might have an air flow restriction. Air flow can be restricted by dirty filters, blockages from trees, or just dust in general can gather on it. A blocked return duct can also freeze the coil. IF you are low on refrigerant, it will also cause the coil to freeze.
