The 80% furnace is initially cheaper to purchase. The 80% means that 80% of the heat generated by the burnt fuel is used and the other 20% is wasted. It is not as efficient as the other models that have a higher number. The 90% furnace uses 90% of the heat generated and only 10% goes to waste. This is also called a condensing furnace because the gas is passed through a heat exchanger and then forced past radiator/coils and the remaining moisture is cooled, condensed, and released.
